The Republic of Daranir

During the war of independence, many colonies chose to remain neutral and were mostly spared the ravages of war, but that did not stop them from applying for independence when the war ended. Most controversial were the colonies in and around the Daranir system, which publicly denounced their warring neighbours, only to then reap the rewards of independence.

The Republic of Daranir is now one of the largest and most powerful protectorates and is currently in the process of applying to become the seventh state of the UTC. The system of government is a democratic monarchy, though their most unusual take on royal succession has caused some unrest in the Coalition. Though the Chancellor’s power is supreme, he is still answerable to a democratically elected parliament and can be deposed by a majority vote. Most citizens of the Republic enjoy comfortable lifestyles, fuelled by steady trade and a robust economy.

The Cirin Alliance

The Cirin Alliance began as a loose affiliation of colonies during the war of independence, but subsequently became an outspoken and rebellious protectorate of the UTC. Having suffered significantly in social and economic terms during the war, the Alliance demanded aid from the UTC in the form of food and terraforming equipment. These demands were mostly ignored, and the Alliance soon faced famine, massive unemployment and exponential inflation. In the early twenty-sixth century, a series of terrorist attacks on neighbouring nations was blamed on the Cirin Alliance, and they were eventually expelled from the Coalition.

Cippled by growing popular unrest, the Alliance government was finally toppled by coup d'état, and months of fighting followed as the allied systems vied for power. New governments came and went, some lasting for less than a week, until the systems finally agreed to establish a council of elders representing each member world with the first priority being an end to the food crisis and unemployment. The result is a state which describes itself as a ‘Socialist Democracy’, but has been less kindly called a ‘dangerous melting-pot of Communists, Anarchists and farmers with delusions of grandeur’.

Today the Cirin Alliance has ended the famine, reduced unemployment and halted inflation. They regard the Republic of Daranir with utter contempt, publicly denouncing it as an expansionist dictatorship, run by war-profiteers. When a terrorist attack on the Republic House of Parliament was attributed to Cirin sympathisers, the Republic declared war. The Alliance has denied ever sanctioning terrorists and has accused the Republic of orchestrating the attack.

The United Terran Coalition (UTC)

For over three centuries the allied colonies were governed by the Earth Alliance, until the twenty-fifth century when an insurrection turned into civil war, now called the ‘War of Independence. The Earth Alliance’s final actions were to partition the outer colonies into three states and seven protectorates, and establish the United Terran Coalition. All member nations of the UTC are governed by universal laws and enjoy trade and political benefits. In the last two-hundred years, the number of states has increased to six, and the number of protectorates has varied considerably.

Not all governments are formally recognised by the UTC, and some are subject to sanctions and even embargos. Although the member states of the UTC are the wealthiest of nations, the protectorates and non-aligned governments often express their anger at being ‘abandoned’ by the Coalition.
