Derelict spaceships aren't stationary. They maintain their vector indefinitely, including their spin (or angle of list). While a functional ship nullifies this kind of motion using artificial gravity and inertial compensators, it's best to bring a derelict to a relative halt before boarding it. This is normally achieved using either a grappling beam, or by linking up and using your own thrusters (or gravitic drive in this case).
