All of my characters use three base textures for the body (face, torso, limbs), so that's a minimum of nine textures per character. Some characters also use luminance, normal, reflection, and occlusion textures. Hair models also have separate textures, as do individual pieces of clothing. In summary: One character might use *dozens* of texture maps.
