Technical question about events of chapter 8?

In Ch 8 a destroyer seems to have blown one of Niobe's stabilizers clear off the ship yet she is still able to make limited FTL speed. Now earlier you gave us a description of how jump-space and stabilizers work for FTL travel in Crimson Dark.This raised a question for me of how can Niobe still travel on her own? I would have thought without the balanced stabilizer she normally uses Niobe would be incapable of jumping safely. My second question pertains to Niobe's age. She is two centuries old at lest and has just had about 1/6 to 1/4 of her volume destroyed in the form of a stabilizer. Would it even be possible to repair her due to lack of parts or economic feasibility? If she can be given new stabilizers would they be modern ones of a new design?

It is implied that the less stabilizer the slower the transit time. A little bit analogues to sails I would guess.

As for the fate of Niobe it sounds like there already was little hope of her being salvaged. I would hazard to guess that she has gone under some major refits in a couple of centuries. As a privateer I would imagine upgrading the engines and jump system would be almost a necessity. But with so much damage it seems unlikely the repairs would cost less than a new ship.

So how sentimental is Niobe's crew?

Or, perhaps more importantly, how generous is the CDF feeling, and how deep are their pockets?

Considering their in the middle of a rather vicious war, and the ship they blew (half-way) to hell was officially working for their enemies, I doubt they'll be feeling overly generous.

On the other hand, it's possible that the Niobe is from a mass produced line of light freighters (similar to the Millenium Falcon), so parts are easy to come by or easy to improvise from similar parts with a talented engineer. In which case the CDF might be willing to help them repair the ship in return for service running blockades and the like.

Niobe was originally a luxury yacht, built in a time when expensive ships weren't particularly sleek or shiny, but made up for it with lots of wasted space and mass.

Well, there's still a but giving hope for Niobe. Given the description stabilizers don't necessarily have to be full of complicated tech. Maybe it's mostly a few (cheap) sensors, actuators and/or engine stuff plus as much spread out mass as possible that (usually) stays at its relative position, so the nav-computer can use it as reference to calculate how to control the FTL drive to go as fast as possible without rearranging the ships matter somewhat during the process. The more fixed position mass compared to mass that changes position between jumps (cargo) or even moves all over the friggin' place during the jump (crew, passengers) the better. Probably.

The crew doesn't seem to have much sentimental feelings about Niobe, especially if there's a chance for a new ship on the horizon. But the captain seems to be sentimental enough for all of them, no, actually more enough for even a medium sized cruiser crew. Though given they seem to be prisoners of war the question arises who owns Niobe even if it's crew will be set free.

Somehow, I have this feeling that Hal won't be missing Niobe.

Still, I'd think that the parts for stabilizers would be pretty much ubiquitous. While there may be compatibility issues (differences in manufacturers, quality and government minimum requirements, to name a few), since they all do basically the same thing it's possible that there are third-party adapters like there are with parallel port-to-USB adapters today.

Just a thought.

Depends on how well the Judges go. With one extremely hostile, one on the verge of yay or nay, and the captain herself pretty much for him, it would have to come from evidence that isn't present. More specifically, the fact that the one ship we had seen them try to raid was going to be raided by an even more notorious and dangerious PIRATE, not a privateer.

From a legal, technical stand point (to me atleast), Privateers are like mercenaries. Their paid to do a job, which in this case is denying the enemy access to material that can be used in war. As long as Captain Vaegyr kept records of what was stolen and can reference to what is used on the military/civilian side.

Unlike privateers, pirates can and will attack anything that isn't being escorted or protected, will take everything that isn't nailed down, junk the ship, and if their being particularly merciful, will drop the crew on a hospitable planet. If their not merciful, they'll through them out an airlock with a vac suit or worse.

As bad as it seems now, the fact that he's a privateer can work to his advantage. Possibly.

As for the ship, the fact it's recognized in certain circles and the fact it can go through them more or less intact makes it a lucrative idea to bring it back to spec.

Just depends on how well the crew wants to work for the CDF.

He could always pull a Star Trek IV and give them a completely different ship of the same class and just add a "-A" at the end. ;)

Though I wouldn't mind seeing them in a different ship. Niobe was a fine vessel, but change is always exciting. I don't know how feasible creating a new model would be though, so I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

The speculation about the damage to the Niobe being uneconomical to repair assume an production line manufacturing economy where cost are largely related to production run length. If on the other hand you have a manufacturing base built around computer controlled fabricators then the major cost might be engineering. In the case of the Niobe's stabilizer any working tested stabilizer design of roughly the same size might cost the same, assuming they have the designs on file. ;)
