I generally try to avoid pop-culture references since this story is set almost 700 years in the future, but some opportunities are just too good to pass up :)

Well, if the Wards can have a Firefly poster on the grounds that, hey, 20th century culture still includes Shakespeare's work from the 16th...

Hmm... I wonder how parodies and spoofs like Princess Bride will be viewed several centuries from now? Will they be enjoyed as humorous works or as serious insight into the culture and literature of their time?

...methinks that's a topic for some other venue, another thread at the least.

Back on topic a little more, with Kari's recent comment about Espenson's new Control, I think there may be yet another character who falls into the category of only "mostly dead".
Some pithy statement goes here.

Very interesting point about culture and literature seen a few centuries on. Like to see what people made of this century (and the last) in a few hundred years.

re: ch 9, page 30, I think r2 would do bang up job. Not much on speeches and kissing babies, but who needs that anyway? Pity we can't say much more like that about our pollies parties.

Yay... for Whisper and Daniel!

Oh please! What decision is there? Morn, Zathras and R2D2.

Wish the Aussie elections could give us people we would trust as much to do the right thing rather than the popular thing.

Well chiming as a token US citizen. You are not alone in being disenchanted with the current batch of politicians. Just lucky you that you only get abused for 6 weeks, elections are 2 years out and they are already starting in on it, and the ads for midterm elections are being broadcast now, ugh.

Great, now Daniel gets to shoot Kari in the leg for leaving behind Whisper *wink*.

I concur with Draelun (Morn, Xathras and R2).

Up here in the States we essentially have to decide between two parties that would be comically inept at running government properly if they weren't dead serious about their respective policies. While technically there are more than the Democratic and Republican parties (Green, Independent, Libertarian, token attempts at Fascist and Socialist parties and the hopefully short-lived Tea Party that can't seem to make up its mind about what it wants), the Dems and the GOP are really the only ones with enough influence to get their candidates elected to office, and the problem with being a pick-and-choose centrist like me is that both sides assume that because you happen to support one of their policies you must therefore agree with all of them. I personally find Republican Party rhetoric to be disagreeable and childish, but at the same time the Democrats need an opposition to keep their own policies in check. If only the current political landscape weren't so polarized, maybe we could actually get something done that everyone agrees on...

Here in the UK at the moment we get the ConDem (really the Conservatives with a few token Liberals) and Labour. The joys of a coalition... Politics - so much hype, so little difference... *sigh*

In other news, The Princess Bride rules! I really should re-watch that some time soon!

Am I the only one who would pick Rom over Morn?
