Re: Official "Discuss the latest page" thread

Well, I'm sure a few tanks of fuel is worth avoiding a dead pilot and a wrecked fighter. It's a bit more than that. First there's the simple cost of the fighters. Craft used for training are craft that can't be used in combat. You keep some back anyhow, but if you've got more people than equipment,...

Re: Official "Discuss the latest page" thread

Who says she has to give up flying to teach? What better way is there to teach a newbie how not to die, than to ask for her scimitar with a training loadout and show them how you DO die. Flight time is expensive, and there's also the risk of newbies hurting themselves or damaging valuable equipment...

Re: Official "Discuss the latest page" thread

the nuke idea has ben thought of in the past but not as a weapon system but as a propulsion systems and gravity manipulation is theatrically possible according to current string theory sympathetic frequency oscillation http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/magazine/15-11/st_alphageek now if i ca...

Re: Official "Discuss the latest page" thread

but at relativistic velocities, energy approaches infinity as velocity approaches C, so if your projectile is going 5 9s of C, and you knock 1% of it's speed off, you'll be dumping the overwhelming majority of it's energy. The corollary to this, of course, is that accelerating the projectile to 5 9...

Re: Official "Discuss the latest page" thread

Relativistic railgun shots look more like nukes detonating at the impact point( 0.1 gram at 0.99C for example, would have nearly as much energy as the nuke detonated at hiroshima). Only if all energy is dissipated into the target. If your 0.1 gram pellet enters at 0.99C and exists at 0.989C then on...

Re: Official "Discuss the latest page" thread

Rail gun projectile shrapnel would likely be below the maximum size that normal ship armour is designed to cope with. Remembering that every ship has to cope with dust at anything up to relativistic velocities, as well as space debris of all kinds. Noting that a ship may be moving at significant ve...

Re: Official "Discuss the latest page" thread

From the comment about entry and exit points, these are NOT high velocity railguns, which means the projectiles have high mass and relatively low velocity. Probably something like an ingot of tungsten impacting at 1~20 km/s. But this makes me hopeful that the projectiles had room for out-of-range s...

Re: Official "Discuss the latest page" thread

A railgun projectile need not be magnetic at all, only conductive. The induced magnetic field is what actually propels the projectile, and the bigger problem is finding something durable to use as your rails. From the comment about entry and exit points, these are NOT high velocity railguns, which m...

Re: Official "Discuss the latest page" thread

I'm curious about why Novosi would call for a defensive posture, maybe to feign overconfidence. Generally in combat you should only assume a defensive "safe" posture when you already have an advantage, when you're at a disadvantage you're better off taking a risk. Also, shouldn't the commisar say, "...
